The manuscrips of both collections had all, probably, their origin inTurkey and mostly contain texts in Turkish. The manuscripts that belongedto Flemming are various in genre: fifve are mainly concerned with Islamicreligion,magicandthehistoryofthefifrstfourcaliphs;threecontainpoetry,amongthemtwodivans(oneofwhichisararecopyofthepoemsofthe16th-centurypoetʿAbdulvehhābofElmalı)andaromanceinmesnevirhyme.Onemanuscript contains a copy of the popularPandnāmaattributed to ʿAṭṭārwith a Turkish translation and Persian-Turkish vocabularies. Four of thenine manuscripts are miscellanies that contain more than one main text.In a way, this collection combines some main trends by which OttomanSchrifttumis characterized: a dominance of multi-text volumes and a dom-inance of texts on religion, of poetry and of a lively interest in Persian liter-ature among Ottoman literati. The manuscripts were, as far as we can see,mostly produced in the late 17th- to early 18th centuries; one was copied inthe 16th and another in the 17th century. A few manuscripts show traces of19th-century Ottoman owners.
